Who Will be the Backup Quarterback for the Colts in 2024?

Ryan Tannehill

Ryan Tannehill is set to hit free agency after a year where he lost his starting position in Tennessee. While he is among the leading candidates to possibly earn a “stop-gap” type starting role it can not be ruled out that he would take a backup role. Tannehill saw plenty of success in Tennessee leading the Titans to two AFC South titles.

Perhaps the biggest argument for someone like Tannehill is the experience you would be bringing into the quarterback room. The 36-year old has 12 starting seasons under his belt in the NFL. Bringing that kind of starting experience would be a huge advantage in the continuing development of Richardson.

NFL Draft

In a year that is considered to be deep at the quarterback position, the Colts may look to the Draft. Undoubtedly, this would be the most cap friendly approach. In the past general manager Chris Ballard has not shied away from taking a flyer on a quarterback in the later rounds. Ultimately, going this route would leave you with one of the youngest quarterback rooms in the NFL, but is not something that can be ruled out.

Some names to watch:

  • Bo Nix, Oregon
  • Spencer Rattler, South Carolina
  • Sam Hartman, Notre Dame
  • Taulia Tagovailo, Maryland
  • Joe Milton III, Tennesee
