A $45 million plan is on the table this week in South Bend, aimed at transforming Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium, where the South Bend Cubs play, into a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue.

The South Bend Redevelopment Authority’s recent vote has paved the way for the city to proceed with a $45 million bond issuance, marking a significant step forward in funding the proposed improvements. Notably, the plan revolves around the expansion of the stadium, primarily focusing on the addition of a new upper deck of seats and the construction of a versatile events venue.

The driving force behind this ambitious project is South Bend Cubs owner, Andrew Berlin, who successfully lobbied Indiana legislators last year for changes in tax laws governing city-owned entertainment facilities. As a result, the planned enhancements are not expected to burden local taxpayers.

Berlin envisions a substantial boost in stadium capacity, aiming to accommodate more than 10,000 attendees at South Bend Cubs games. Currently seating 5,000, Four Winds Field has regularly witnessed record attendance numbers exceeding 8,000 during recent summers.

In addition to the upper deck expansion, the proposed improvements include crucial upgrades to the stadium’s infrastructure, such as electrical and plumbing systems, addressing long-standing maintenance needs. Furthermore, plans feature the construction of a new 20,000-square-foot building beyond the left field wall, dedicated to hosting corporate events and parties, enhancing the stadium’s appeal as a multifunctional venue.

Pending approval from the South Bend Common Council on April 8, construction is slated to commence post the 2024 baseball season, with the upper deck expected to be largely completed by the beginning of the 2025 season. The project timeline aims to ensure minimal disruption to home games while delivering significant upgrades to enhance the overall fan experience.

The recent legislative changes not only facilitate funding for Four Winds Field but also signify a broader strategic move to bolster South Bend’s position as a regional hub for sports and entertainment. With the revised law allowing the city to retain a larger share of tax revenues generated by tourism and entertainment sites, South Bend stands to benefit economically while fostering growth in its leisure industry.

City officials emphasize that the proposed improvements align with a long-term vision to position South Bend as an attractive destination for professional sports franchises and entertainment events. As plans for the stadium upgrades solidify, South Bend residents can anticipate a revitalized sports and entertainment hub that not only enhances the fan experience but also contributes to the city’s economic vitality and cultural vibrancy for years to come.
